Duran Droolan

by Suw on May 5, 2004

Finally and at last, some photos of the recent Duran Duran tour have surfaced. Not sure if any of these are from the gigs I was at, but John had the same red shirt on at Cardiff, so that's good enough for me. After all, the inside of one venue looks pretty much the same as any other.

Two part dentistry.

John never used to have any chest hair. I am not sure if he's been taking testosterone shots or something, but he's way to keen to show his fur off these days. Please, for the sake of humanity, put it away, JT.

Good choice of colours, methinks.

Ok, so I know I'm old enough to know better, but still… John Taylor. *sigh* *swoon* *faint*

I didn't mention before the awesome circular lighting rig, did I? Well, it was circular and it moved up and down and it was awesome.

Is Simon really nibbling on John's ear? And if so, why can't I?

Tales that Simon and John were snatching a snog during the gig had been circulating, and I was a bit disappointed that they didn't at either of the gigs I went to. I guess a photo is the best I'll get.
(By the way, if you own any of these pics are are feeling all selfish and arsey about me posting them here, firstly go away and read Lawrence Lessig's Free Culture and ask yourself if you might actually be able to benefit non-monetarily from such exposure, then secondly email me and let me know to whom I should attribute them.)

New cure for persistent email

by Suw on May 5, 2004

Too many emails in your inbox? Feeling overwhelmed by unanswered correspondence? Guilt finally getting to you? Can't face sorting them all out?
My answer: ctrl A, ctrl D. Works every time. If I owe you an email and you haven't had it yet, well, chances ain't looking good.
(Er, actually… I just made a new folder and stuck everything in that instead. Now I have an empty inbox. It's not gonna last, though. I can tell.)

ClearlyCalm

by Suw on May 5, 2004

Every now and again I get an email from someone asking me to link to their site. Usually I will check it out, discover that it's porn or a link farm or, worse, poorly written, and thusly ignore it. Like everyone, I have my own criteria for what I will and won't link to, but simply being asked isn't gonna get you on my blogroll.
Today I found an email that I got a couple of weeks ago from SidSays of ClearlyCalm, asking me for a link. I don't remember getting it, but as I was attempting to clear out my inbox today, there it was. Took at look at the blog in question and for the first time in recent memory I'm answering a request for a link with a link.
ClearlyCalm is the blog of an inmate in Wormwood Scrubs, apparently sent down for fraud. As with all anonymous blogs, there is no way of telling whether it's real or not, but it's well written and very much worth reading, so go take a look.

Finding time for blogging

by Suw on May 5, 2004

Just talking to Kevin Marks in IRC about finding the time to blog. Kevin works for blog cosmos engine Technorati, so blogging feels like work to him and, when prioritising what he needs to get done most, he opts for coding over blogging. I can understand why – you have to prioritise and when you do those non-urgent, non-important tasks (if that's how he views blogging) fall by the wayside.
“I think it is because it takes me a big chunk of time to write a decent post,” Kevin says, “and I know that, and I know I have loads to do so I don't write the post. But I can slice away a post's worth or more in IRC because I'm doing it in parallel with other stuff.”
I can't argue with that, but I wish Kevin would blog more, even if only short posts. Short is, after all, sweet.
(Not that I mind being his amanuensis and providing him with a sort of blogging-by-proxy service – I've blogged a few of my conversations with Kevin and am happy to do so. But it would be nice to see stuff straight from the horse's mouth.)
I've done the exact opposite of Kevin, though. With the number of contacts and leads I've generated through lurking in #joiito and through blogging, I now view them both as a form of work and therefore legitimate things for me to be doing during the day.
Admittedly, much of my IRCing is possibly, technically, not work-related, but it's all about presence. If I am online, I am there in #joiito, and being there leads to serendipitous meetings, conversations and opportunities that would not otherwise happen. That is, to me, very valuable so I am happy to pay the price in time for those rewards.
Plus it stops me going completely hatstand at being stuck in the middle of nowhere 24/7, but that?s another issue.
