Given inflation and the state of the exchange rate, isn't a $64,000 question now worth about £2.50?

D'oh the technology, part the second

by Suw on May 11, 2005

I've found an app called mo:blog which should allow me to post to my blogs from my Treo. If I'm lucky.
UPDATE: It worked! Yay! Pity it won't let me pick categories, but I suppose I can live with that. Not like I'm going to be blogging from my Treo all the time.

San! Fran! Cisco!

by Suw on May 11, 2005

I'm hauling my ass over to San Francisco in June for the Supernova05 conference (20 – 22 June), at which I will be moderating a panel discussion on Business Blogging, with Robert Scoble, Charlene Li and someone from Six Apart. That'll be on Monday 20 June, 2.30 – 4.00pm, if you want to come along.
I am so looking forward to this trip. I love conferences, probably because I haven't been to all that many, but the opportunity to hang out with cool people who have brains so much bigger than mine is always welcome. I also relish the prospect of being a workshop moderator. Never done it before, so it will be an interesting challenge. It's always easier to be a panel member, but if that's all I ever do I won't ever improve my public speaking skills.
Also looking forward to hanging out with my friends in SF. I know loads people over there, many of whom I have never actually met. Will be way cool to be able to go for a pint or two – I really want to go to the Welsh pub I saw last time I was there – and get to know people in an offline setting.
If you're in SF and you want to meet up, drop me an email.

So the situation with my PowerBook got critical. Too many lines arriving at too fast a rate and too slow a processor. It's making working difficult now, and it's stopping me doing stuff I need to do. My delightful parents, who are truly wonderful, kind and generous human beings (who don't read this blog, but I may have to point this post out to them) have located sufficient funds for a new iBook for me. I really am lucky to have such supportive and generous family.
We ordered it on Friday, and the Apple site said it would be 'built on or before 11/05/2005'. Well, today's the 11th. Where's my damn iBook? Not that I'm impatient, of course, I just… want… my… new… iBook! I can't wait to fiddle round with it and get all my data transferred over from both the TiBook and the PC. Just think… all my stuff in one place! I won't need the PC then, apart from a few programmes I rarely use which either I don't have in Mac form or which I can't get in Mac form. I hardly use the PC now anyway, to be honest. All my work is done on the Mac.
*checks the Apple store tracker once more*
*twiddles fingers*
I do hope their carrier pigeons are feeling strong. I also hope I can earn a bit more in the way of cold hard cash over the coming month so that I can pay my parents back. All offers of work gratefully received.
UPDATE (6pm, 11/5/05): Just got an email from Apple: “The demand for the product you ordered has been higher than anticipated. We are shipping as quickly as possible, but cannot meet the ship date we previously estimated for you. We now expect to ship your order by May 18th, 2005.”
Hang on, Apple. You're telling me that you're surprised by the number of people ordering iBooks from you? I don't believe it. I think this is more of a 'Ha! Suckered you! You thought we really meant it when we said we could get your shiny new toy to you within a week, but we really had no intention of doing so. Actually, we think we might pop away on holiday to the Bahamas now for a fortnight. Maybe we'll deal with it when we get back.'
Why is it that the bigger the company is, the longer it takes them to actually send you what you've bought?
UPDATE (10.30am, 12/5/05): They are 'preparing shipment'. Whooeee! Wonder how long it'll be now? Not that I'm impatient, mind you. *cough*
UPDATE (2pm, 12/5/05): It's been dispatched! They say 7-8 days delivery, but it could be less. Looks like it's coming from the Netherlands. Wheee!
