Cruel and unusual punishment

by Suw on May 16, 2004

Been a while since I've been out on the bike. Well, I say 'a while', more like two years, really. Never rode it much in Reading because the only decent bike route from my house involved two miles over grass, which was just way too energy-sapping. Didn't ride it at all at Horton Heath because going out on those roads is taking your life in your hands. Here, though, there's no excuse. No traffic. No hills. No grass. (Well, no grass that can't be avoided, anyway.)
So, dug the bike out, dusted it down, oiled it up and took it out.
Managed a whole ten minutes before my thighs turned to useless jelly. I am so horribly out of shape. Actually my shape per se is fine, which is what's so deceptive. I don't look horribly unfit, but I am.
I'm going to attempt to get back into the routine I once kept of getting up, having breakfast, then going out for a ride before showering and starting my working day.
Wish me luck. It didn't last long then either.

A great disappointment

by Suw on May 16, 2004

It is a gloriously sunny day today. Just beautiful.
I used to have dreams about days like today. I'd dream of having a wireless connection that allowed me to take the laptop into the garden so that I could sit in the sun and burn to a crisp whilst chatting on IRC and failing to do any work. Call me sad if you will, but this is a dream I've had for years.
Imagine my complete disappointment to discover that whilst I can now take the laptop outside, thanks to our new(ish) wireless network, I can't see a damn thing on the screen at all whatsoever. Not a sausage. Too bright, you see, not enough contrast. In fact, not any contrast.
🙁
I'm gutted like a fish on market day. It's so nice outside, it seems criminal to be sitting in here, in the darkest, most dismal room in the house, no matter how important it is that I get done today what I have to get done today.
And no, I'm not going to stick my head in a box in order provide enough shade to see by.
