Guardian goes for a slut

by Suw on December 18, 2003

Oh, you all know the story by now.

Suw,

Well, almost all, maybe.

The Guardian British blog awards came out today, and the winner in the 'best written' category was a prostitute. Make of that what you will.

Ooh-ee-ooh, spooky coincidence: Sat at work just bimbling around The Guardian's website and I happen to click on this very article about their Blog Awards… and then I pop in here and, stone me, you've posted a message about it.

Ya see: we are clearly on the same wavelength, baby. We have a deep connection. Can you feel it?

On the other hand, it may have just been a complete fluke…

Oh… and the hooker's blog is so much more interesting than my diary…

Very spooky Steve. Obviously we have a psychic connection that cannot be denied. Let me guess… you're thinking about… oh, no, wait, I can't post that on a public blog, can I?

And the whore can fuck off (no pun intended). Don't know why I feel so antsy about it. Maybe it's because I fear it was picked *because* it was a slut's blog. I dunno. There are so many great blogs out there that get no attention at all, and so many shitty blogs that do. It's that whole power law thing kicking again. Just annoys me.

At least the hooker has something to write about. I really don't know why I am bothering to try and write a diary. The idea was to get into a regular writing habit but I have fuck all to say apart from, “Got up, went to work, came home, tried to write, didn't get very far, very bored, life is dull…”

Of course, one possibility is that I am in fact a very boring person.

The hooker's blog is probably all made up anyway.

The reason I restarted this blog was because I wanted to get into the habit of writing on a regular basis, and it has worked. Some days it's harder to think of something to say than others. Quite often I fear that what I write is just boring the pants of everyone who comes within a mile radius of my blog, and those are the hardest days to find something to write about.

Poxy blog awards don't help either. I mean, I love Stuart Hughes, he's an inspiration, but has it got to the point where you have to either be selling your body for sex or have lost a limb to be deemed interesting?

Sometimes I wish something horrible and dramatic had happened to me so that I could blog about it to critical acclaim, but then I remember that something horrible did happen, and no one really gave a flying fuck because it wasn't particulary dramatic or entertaining in the way that I suspect fucking strangers is (if you're impressed by that sort of thing, I suppose).

Um, anyway, why don't you try writing about other stuff – you know, sort of op ed stuff. Or write a short flash fiction piece every day? I am convinced that writing every day is good for the creative juices and if you think your own life isn't something you feel you want to write about, then write something else.

Frankly, I've been so fucking depressed for the last couple of months I really just want a rest from everything. Thankfully, tomorrow is my last day at work for two weeks so I plan to just chill, gather myself and put aside all the unnecessary bullshit that I has been dragging me down of late.

And then maybe, just maybe, I will be in a better frame of mind to get on with what I should be doing (and the only real reason I think that I was farted out into this world).

Mate, I know how that goes. Been there, done that, got the scars to prove it. Take some time over Christmas and spoil yourself rotten. You deserve it.

Steve Kane December 18, 2003 at 8:31 pm

Thanks, chuck. You're a sweety; anybody ever tell you that?

You do the same. You deserve it too.

Thank you. Sometimes; not often (enough). I shall, I promise.

Steve Kane December 18, 2003 at 9:33 pm

You'd better, otherwise I'd have to inflict horrible tortures about your person.

Why do I get the feeling that you'd enjoy that?

Steve Kane December 18, 2003 at 11:01 pm

Oh, I would.

And, ironically, I have actually managed to write a respectably lengthy diary entry tonight.
