Mine tend to live in a cupboard, although they've all got cases and gigbags to protect them.
You should really think of getting a hard case, like a Hiscox, if only for peace of mind.
Hiscoxes are made just down the road from where I come from, plug plug.
As for the fingers..it could be worse. I managed to get a blister on my index finger due to overpracticing, about two days before a gig. You could alway try putting a thin film of superglue on your fingers to temporarily harden them up. Some friends of mine on UKMG recommend this. Personally I suffer through the pain, it's worth it in the end.
Don't play the guitar till they're absolutely dry, though….
Is it true that if you put vaseline on your fingers you don't get blisters?
I've never heard of putting vaseline on your fingers to stop blisters, but I imagine that getting vaseline on the strings wouldn't necessarily do them much good – or for that matter, the finish of the guitar, depending on how it's applied.
