The Infanta Isabel of Portugal

The Infanta Isabel, Duchess of Burgundy, also known as Isabella or Isabel of Portugal, was born on 21 February 1397 and died on 17 December 1471. The daughter of John I of Portugal, she married Philip III, Duke of Burgundy when she was 31.

This portrait is a copy, from c. 1500, of an altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden which was painted around 1445-1450. The original must have been painted before 1451, as an anonymous altarpiece from that year, which now in New York, is strongly influenced by it.

The original necklace features a central pearl that seems to have been drilled three ways, which is not easy for me to replicate. Instead, I have devised a way to link the pendant chain from the choker using a Y-shaped chain. This is one of my favourite necklaces to make, and has been very popular.
