Elizabeth Brydges

Elizabeth Brydges was born in England Lord Chandos, and became maid of honour to Queen Elizabeth I. Her DOB is unclear, with one source saying 1578/9, but if one does the maths provided by the portrait below, she must have been born around 1575. She married Sir John Kennedy, one of James I’s Scottish attendants in 1603. The marriage was a bit of a disaster as it was rumoured that Kennedy already had a wife, but the lawfulness of the wedding seems never to have been settled. She died deserted and in poverty.

In this 1589 portrait by Hieronimo Custodis, painted when she was 14, Elizabeth wears an intricate necklace possibly of jet or black agate.

In my version I use slightly bigger pearls and therefore the net is broader than the original, but I’m considering making a black agate version with much smaller beads.
