So T`Other`s brother (ooh! that rhymes!) has this really great PDA/phone called a QTEK 9100 or an XDA mini S depending on who`s selling it to you. I've been thinking of getting one of these for a while and now I'm getting to play with one and I have to say that so far I really like it. This blog post is being written using IE and the old fashioned admin pages, and it's working just fine over our wifi network. Nice! I might just have to go get myself one of these.

I write on a Blackberry, which is wonderful for compactness in i-harware plus doubling as a phone. But I long for a slightly different solution.
Marketers always move toward the 'convergence' appliance that will do the work of many stand-alone devices. (It's a television AND a phone AND a refrigerator!) But users ultimately gravitate toward specialty devices. (I have, for me, the BEST phone, the BEST television, the BEST i-hardware.) Any one-stop-shopping solution combining multiple functions in one appliance necessarily cannot do that.
I have been considering, of all things, getting a plug-in keyboard for my Blackberry. But then I would yearn really to have a higher *speed* device.
I'll look forward Suw, to your further reviews if you get the QTEK.

I have XDA mini S my self and it means I can go out with friends for the night and still have the option in a crunch situation to log onto a server to fix a problem. You have to remember to turn the wifi off when your not using it as it eats battery and the most annoying thing is that it runs windows mobile 5 so when you press the x to close an application it does not really close the application. The only way to close down an application property is to go to the task manager and do it from there.
What I want is some one to port linux to the device. 🙂
Oh gosh, I got an XDA Mini S on a new contract with O2 in November and it's one of the worst thing's I've done.
It's mindnumbingly slow (though that my be in part because the stupid O2 Active menu is installed), the Windows Mobile 5.0 OS is ridiculous, it doesn't sync with a Mac yet (I bought on the expectation that the third-party sync software makers who promised imminent connectivity back in November actually meant “imminent”), the phone is quite unresponsive.
I'm going to try to keep it in good nick and will look for a different SIM-free device like the P990 (used to have a perfectly good P900) or even a *normal* phone like a Nokia…

Actually, the info my friend Pete sent me by email about how it doesn't sync with a mac has really put me off. If I can't sync it to a mac, what is the point? I live off my mac.
So I guess the answer to my question is no, I shan't be getting one. Maybe I need to wait for the Treo 700p.
