Back to the beginning

by Suw on January 10, 2006

When I first started reading blogs, I only read a few. A handful. Then I found through those few blogs a whole host of others. More and more and more. Wonderful, intelligent, amusing, interesting… A world of fascination.
Then I got work.
Now I hardly have time to read all the blogs that are in my reader. Don't even have time to thin them out by chucking out all the ones I don't read anymore. Instead, I've just reorganised a little. And I've gone back to just reading the few that I started off reading, with maybe a couple of additions, four years ago. There are about ten, in fact, that I am reading on a daily basis. Well, nine and a half, because Coatse writes too much for me to keep up so I dip in to his as and when I'm feeling brave.
Just reading a few blogs regularly is starting to hook me back into the blogosphere though. I am starting to feel like this is my medium again, rather than a medium that, basically, pwnd me.
The other thing I've done is remove my blogroll. It was way out of date, didn't reflect reality at all, so it had to go. I may do a new one in due course, but I think it needs a holiday for now.
So do I, mind you, despite the fact that today is just my second day back at work. The last three weeks doesn't much feel like the holiday it was supposed to be. I forced myself to take a week off completely, and that turned out to be a strange sort of hard work all by itself.
So yes, there's it all explained. Back to first principles and hope for the best.

I use the blogroll that Bloglines generates and that allows for an accurate view of what I'm reading. Seems fairest too.

Suw, I have always thought your blogroll was not just the classiest treasure trove I knew where one collection of such existed, but I have always enjoyed browsing through from time to time and finding new entries that I never came across. Some have become fast friends, in a reference-book sort of way.
So here's my request: Would it be possible that you might have a single link on your front page (wow, what an old-sounding word that is), that points to a single post in your blog, that contains and perpetuates the beloved blogroll?
I agree it can be a nuisance to watch the whole thing load when I am accessing c&v via blackberry. Maybe this would solve that problem while relegating the delightful roll to the archives. I'd like to know I could still find it somewhere.

As you completely failed to add me to your Blogroll, I don't regret its demise.
Arf.
I don't actually read many blogs, myself. Except yours, obviously. Aactually, I'm lying – I only came here to check if you had added me to your Blogroll but now that's gone there's not much point in my coming back.
My blog is rubbish anyway so you don't have to read that.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing … my Bloglines subscriptions are getting out of hand … I've got some 6000+ unread entries and I just don't have the time to keep up with them, but I just can't bring myself to unsubscribe from them for some reason.
I really should, though. I'd like to get down to a list of maybe 10-20 blogs that I read “regularly” and keep all the rest as del.icio.us links with a certain tag, perhaps.

Been there, done that. But now I'm thinking of setting together a “links” page, because blogrolls also have the advantage of being a door open into the blogosphere for newcomers. Not so much a “this is what I read, this is what I like” but a “try poking around here” list.
