So the situation with my PowerBook got critical. Too many lines arriving at too fast a rate and too slow a processor. It's making working difficult now, and it's stopping me doing stuff I need to do. My delightful parents, who are truly wonderful, kind and generous human beings (who don't read this blog, but I may have to point this post out to them) have located sufficient funds for a new iBook for me. I really am lucky to have such supportive and generous family.
We ordered it on Friday, and the Apple site said it would be 'built on or before 11/05/2005'. Well, today's the 11th. Where's my damn iBook? Not that I'm impatient, of course, I just… want… my… new… iBook! I can't wait to fiddle round with it and get all my data transferred over from both the TiBook and the PC. Just think… all my stuff in one place! I won't need the PC then, apart from a few programmes I rarely use which either I don't have in Mac form or which I can't get in Mac form. I hardly use the PC now anyway, to be honest. All my work is done on the Mac.
*checks the Apple store tracker once more*
*twiddles fingers*
I do hope their carrier pigeons are feeling strong. I also hope I can earn a bit more in the way of cold hard cash over the coming month so that I can pay my parents back. All offers of work gratefully received.
UPDATE (6pm, 11/5/05): Just got an email from Apple: “The demand for the product you ordered has been higher than anticipated. We are shipping as quickly as possible, but cannot meet the ship date we previously estimated for you. We now expect to ship your order by May 18th, 2005.”
Hang on, Apple. You're telling me that you're surprised by the number of people ordering iBooks from you? I don't believe it. I think this is more of a 'Ha! Suckered you! You thought we really meant it when we said we could get your shiny new toy to you within a week, but we really had no intention of doing so. Actually, we think we might pop away on holiday to the Bahamas now for a fortnight. Maybe we'll deal with it when we get back.'
Why is it that the bigger the company is, the longer it takes them to actually send you what you've bought?
UPDATE (10.30am, 12/5/05): They are 'preparing shipment'. Whooeee! Wonder how long it'll be now? Not that I'm impatient, mind you. *cough*
UPDATE (2pm, 12/5/05): It's been dispatched! They say 7-8 days delivery, but it could be less. Looks like it's coming from the Netherlands. Wheee!
Stop 'processing' my order and send me my damn iBook!

When I ordered an eMac for my son's birthday it was scheduled to arrive a week after his birthday but somehow it managed to be delivered on the big day ! Perhaps the route from Dublin to Sweden is quicker than Dublin to the UK !!!
Or perhaps they can't find a copy of Tiger to enclose with your new iBook.
There is no wait longer than the wait for a new Mac.
My first Mac caused all sorts of problems, with the van driver unable to find our house, asking at the village post office (this was when there *was* a village post office) and then, being unable to get round the scary hair-pin bend on the edge of the cliff (wuss), reversing the half mile or so to our place. To find us not at home, of course. He left a note saying “I'm not coming back here tomorrow – you want this computer you can bloody well meet me on the side of a road with a number”, or words to that effect.
But it was worth it.
I just ordered a new PowerBook. It was shipped the same day. However, although I've been given a lovely little tracking code, the postal service has let me know that the tracking code cannot be used since Apple did not purchase the tracking ability. Fun stuff. I hope it gets here soon! So excited.
Which one did you picked up ? the 12″ one ? or the 14″ ?
I'm still wondering if I should go for a 12″ powerbook or a 12″ or 14″ ibook…
Perhaps you're caught up in supply channel clearing…. It wouldn't surprise me if a new iBook line-up was announced shortly. In which case, you might find yourself with an unexpected 'upgrade.'

In my experience, shipping estimates for online purchases (unless they are dispatched immediately) are always wrong—just like those “Approximately n minutes left” file-copying progress bars.
I have good news on that one. As you can see from my last blog post I was for ages on the phone with various people at the Cork plant and it seems they are going to move build to order back to Ireland to shorten the wait time.
See the problem is that when one chooses a BTO Mac they send an email to a factory in the far East where someone does the work, sticks it with the rest of a huge shipment and sends it off.
Untill a few years back Apple used the Cork plant to do BTO's and I have been told that this will resume soon.

When I bought my iBook over a year ago it came from Ireland.
