MS to release Welsh module for XP and Office

by Suw on January 25, 2004

Via email from Euan Semple (and Drew), it's reported by The Register that MS has been working with the Welsh Language Board on a Welsh language module for XP and Office.

Whether this step by the notoriously uncooperative MS is because of a rival Welsh version of Linux is, I think, largely irrelevant. They're doing it, and a lot more people use MS than use Linux so at the end of the day we'll have both systems and therefore the majority of Welsh computer users catered for. And that has to be a positive step forward for the language.

Personally, I'd love to use a Welsh Linux instead of Windows. Hell, I'd love to use anything instead of Windows, but frankly Linux scares me – I'm just not techie enough to want to learn how to use it. Maybe when I've more time on my hands I shall.

Oh, wait… Is that a pig up there?

Oink Oink! 😉

That's good news.

Suw,

Please let us know when it is released. Maybe it will be available over here and world wide also.

Sam, as soon as I know, I'll post here. Although I can't promise I'll know as soon as MS release it – I can be slow on the uptake sometimes. 😉 But the info will get out, I promise.

Heh, the languages list on my Mac includes “Cymraeg” and the tool tip tells me that this is Welsh.

Yes, Andrew, but Macs are cool.

Yeah 🙂 Cool, and also totally functional.

I *only* mentioned it apropos of your comment: “Hell, I'd love to use anything instead of Windows, but frankly Linux scares me”.

And I am aware of the pecuniary barrier to Mac ownership faced by unemployed types.

Ha ha, yes, my love of and desire for Macs has not gone unmentioned in the past, but I shall have to wait until I'm a bit more flush.

🙁

Any noises about a Welsh version of OSX? Then Macs really *would* be cool, instead of just expensive and functional.

There's all sorts of open source (not necessarily Linux) software available in Cymraeg: http://www.meddal.org.uk/ for details.

You probably already know this.

It's late.

I'll go now.

suw,

if you wanna try linux, i'd recommend downloading & burning a “linux live” cd like morphix, which you can get here:

http://tinyurl.com/3h9jk

try the one that says “gnome” something or other.

then you juts boot a whole linux distro from the cd, and it doesn't touch your harddrive… pretty low risk.

i'm not sure if they've got all the localized versions on there, however…

yo nic!

Pat, if i ever start to feel brave, i'll do that. Perhaps some time when i can sit on #joiito and ask inane questions about how it works. I'd like to get my head round linux.

Nic – I didn't know about meddal.co.uk so cheers for that. 😀 When i'm less stressed I'll have to explore and see what i can use.
