Insomnia

by Suw on January 5, 2004

I just could not sleep last night. My dreams were way too vivid, even for me, including such things as they did like lots of really, really big tarantulas, the cast of Stargate SG1, two copies of my Mum, a kitten with mastitis (huh?) which died, and pine needles that would hatch out more spiders if I didn't hoover them up.

I'd really hoped to get up early and write a bit, but I spent too long just laying there in bed, trying to get to sleep only to be woken up just as I nodded off by another bout of surreality. Or the cat.

Flipside is I've worked out some stuff for one scene I was stuck on, so it's not all bad. But I'm going to change my duvet for a lighter one today – I think I might have been overheating a bit, even though the radiator's off in my bedroom.

Weird, though, is the way that it's always easier to get to sleep at 7am when you have to get up than it is at 5am.

Anyway, back to 'work' today. First job is to search for one. Update later.

Must have been something in the air last night – Mrs Dio said I woke her in the middle of the night saying our son was “connected to the internet.”

She quizzed me and then I apparently said “he is you know, he's mobile now…” and then she managed to wake me.

Strangely, I vaguely remember trying to stop an LCD screen falling off the bed – all of this points to the fact I should spend less time on the net…

Suw,

I think the spiders came from that opening scene of Raiders.

Weird that it takes me one-and-a-half-hours to fall asleep when I am supposed to be tired, and one-and-a-half-hours to get up when I am supposed to be awake and slept out.

Can someone get that can of sand of out my eyes so I can insert my contacts, please?

gr,

Bram

So does this mean that no one in the northern hemisphere could sleep last night. Went to bed early think, good grief, am I tired! Then lay in bed for two hours before saying, wish I could stay tired….

Word. Sleep rocks. I almost fell asleep at the wheel this morn at 4AM while driving my bro to Philly Int'l Airport.

Oddly enough, today was my first day back at work after a two week break. Normally, I find it hell to get out of bed and drag my sorry carcass out to the car but this morning I got up with no problems, even though I didn't go to bed until 12:30 because I was watching the Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy video I got for Christmas.

Jusr remember that all dreams serve a purpose, i.e. they give your brain the opportunity to go temporarily insane so that you don't go (completely) mad while you are awake (I'm not making this up, either – technically, a dream counts as a psychotic episode).

Weird, this rash of strange dreams people are having. Just don't blame me, guys. Wasn't my fault! Promise!

Bram, yeah, I think the spiders/Raiders connection is definitely valid.

Steve, you know that if you don't dream, you do go mad and eventually you'll start dreaming even when you're awake. Go without sleep long enough, and it'll kill you. Only takes about two weeks, too. Scary.

Hopefully tonight will be a better night though. I changed the duvet on my bed, and discovered that the one I'd had on there was a 13.5 tog duvet. No wonder I'd felt like I was overheating!

Yes, I did know that… we must have seen the same documentary or something!

Actually, I have quite an interest in how the brain works and mental illnesses… my favourite reference book is something called The Oxford Companion To The Mind.

Spooky! I must admit to a similar fascination for how the brain works. Have you read Pinker? He's good for explaining how the brain processes language.

Changing the duvet made all the difference, btw. Although I still had really weird dreams, including one where someone texted me real objects and i couldn't figure out how to text them back. plus there was a train with a guy on it that was teaching swordfighting and very cute. plus i had a boyfriend who vomited up plastic bags, and another who turned out to be a cousin. Eurgh. Weird. Oh, and I was wearing a ra-ra skirt at one point. Scary.

I used to have really vivid and imaginative dreams like the one I had about my brain falling out of my head, but I don't anymore.

I tend to find i dream more if i oversleep. which i suppose makes sense – it's like my brain gets bored and just starts dreaming instead. but the day i have a dream where i just go to the shop and buy a mars bar, well, that'll be a day to remember.

The dreams I hate are the ones where I wake up, hawl myself out of bed, stumble around getting my clothes on, stagger out to the car, get stuck in traffic, run to catch a bus and bumble into the office… only to wake up for real and realise that I have to actually hawl myself out of bed, stumble around getting my clothes on… it feels like I have to go to work twice.

Ug.
