Isn't it funny when a character does something like that, just turns out completely different than what you'd intended? I'd keep going with it, were I you... only perhaps make the "mad-as-a-bag-of-ferrets" character somewhat more... secondary. Or comic relief, if possible. ;-) I know how you feel, though, when you say you feel as though you won't have achieved anything as a writer until you publish a novel. I had that biography published a year ago now, and it still doesn't feel as if it belongs to me, if you see what I mean. I wrote the words, strung 'em all together into sentences and paragraphs and chapters, but it just doesn't mean anything to me. I didn't give birth to it; I just babysat it. :-p Hah!
