Who's in Second Life?

by Suw on September 6, 2006

I joined Second Life a few months ago, but my iBook couldn't handle running the client. I could only take three steps and then I'd have to wait for the client to catch up. Now I'm on a faster machine (which is a way of saying I bought a MacBook), it runs like a dream. I'm determined to spend time in Second Life each day so that I can become proficient in doing stuff and, potentially, earn Linden Dollars (not to mention real ones) from doing interesting things there.
It's a lot more fun, though, to be there when you're there with someone you know. So fess up, y'all. Who's in Second Life? I'm TiddlesMcNubbin Goodnight… for the moment at least. I may get a new avatar with a slightly less silly name. But if you're in the game, let me know.
Oh, and thank you to everyone who emailed me to tell me that Duran Duran are going to be playing a gig in Second Life at some point. Suzanne Vega's already done a performance that was streamed into Second Life (note: the video of the making of her Second Life guitar on that page is amazing), and Duran are going to follow suit with a proper gig. It'll be really fun to see how closely their avatars look like them, and to see how well it is attended. I would guess that Second Life would have the perfect demographic for Durannies, and it seems like an environment that would suit them well. So I can't wait!

Little old me has been in there for a while (although I find the client v. slow on my Macbook). Reynolds Horus is the name to look for.

I joined it a month or so ago, but my graphics card just wouldn't cope with it. I've got nifty new one on order, and as soon as I get it, I'll be up & running. My name's Lizzie Lime 🙂 I so want to go to that Duran show! It's on within the next few days, I'm told, but I haven't checked.

Well, I found you, but I don't think there's much I can do unless you're online. Let me know next time you can be arsed to try and run it on your Macbook. Oddly, I found it to be really zippy on my Macbook, so not sure why that should be.

I really wanna go to that Duran gig too. If you hear anything about exactly when it is or where, let m know! And let me know when you have your new graphics card installed. 🙂

I have an account, but perhaps because I didn't know anyone there and because the graphics are primitive and the interface clumsy compared to the likes of World of Warcraft I got bored after five minutes and haven't been back.

Sure will 🙂 I'll ask around now, see if anybody's got a date. There's nothing up on the band's website yet.

I think it's more fun if you know people there. But also I think it's not a goal-oriented game so much as WoW is, so harder to get into perhaps? Anyway, if you can deal with the graphics, ping me when you're in the game.

I've been a resident for a couple of years (Urban Quirk)…sporadic and bursty usage – and a quite embarrasing lack of lands, buildings and anything that might be construed as a productive use of my time.

Welcome back Suw. I'm in Second Life, Hball Hextall. I find it a bit clunky still myself to be honest, but I'm getting there. And you're right – on your own it's a bit dull (it's not really a game like Warcraft is) but with people there and using it as an advanced IM tool it's pretty good. See you in there. H.

Did a lot in-world last month for this – http://www.wired.com/news/technology/internet/0,71593-0.html
Sat on a virtual couch to interview virtual rock stars and hung out at virtual gigs for a story made of bits.
If you don't see any pre-press, monitor the SL events calendar, which can be accessed on the web, for live music events. See you in-world.
